If you are trying to lose weight, drinking alcohol is not the best answer. There are any reasons why drinking do not work together. Here are some reasons why alcohol effects on metabolism. Alcohol metabolism can also contribute to cirrhosis.

Alcohol, closer to Fat, than protein
And as you can see alcohol interaction and metabolism do not work well together. Alcohol seems to be closer in calories to that of fat, than to protein or carbohydrates. Alcohol has seven calories per gram, and fat has nine calories per gram. If you are out for a night on the town and you are drinking large quantities of alcohol calories are going to add on fast.

There have been studies done that say that when you consume alcohol your metabolism will slow down. This decrease in metabolism can be quite significant. The study shows that this decrease can be as much as 36% at the next meal after drinking. This decrease in metabolism slows the rate at which your body will burn calories. This will also lead to body fat storage.

Alcohol give you that easy feeling

Alcohol is categorized as a depressant. When you are drinking, you often say what the heck, because of the easy feeling that you get from drinking. What will happen then is that you will eat more than what you should. What you really want to do is have something to eat before you go out and drink. This way your stomach has something in it and is not completely empty so the alcohol will not affect you as much.

Lack of Sleep causing weight gain

One thing that does happen when you are drinking, is you have a tendency to fall we sleep quicker. But it is not a sound sleep and you wake up several times during the night. Alcohol metabolism and weight loss and then adding lack of sleep on top of this will not work if you are trying to increase your metabolism. Your body will release cortisol a stress hormone. When you have elevated levels of cortisol, this is going to release insulin, which is going to increase your appetite and also increase fat storage.

 Drink more and Eat more
There is some research that says in sleep deprived people a hormone called Ghrelin (an appetite-stimulating hormone) will increase. What will happen then is you want to eat more and you in turn will consume more calories. Let us define what sleep deprived is. This is a person who gets less than 5 hours of sleep a night.

If you are going to drink alcohol, drink it in moderation, if at all. What moderation is, one drink per day for women and two drinks per day for men. So if your alcohol metabolism is causing you weight gain rather than weight loss, decrease your intake of alcohol. Don’t forget this weight gain is due to excess calories in the alcohol as well as in the extra food you are eating.
