Brain Metabolism and Alzheimer’s Disease
Sunday, March 18th, 2007    Subscribe To Our FeedAlzheimer’s disease this is an awful disease, which is a form of dementia and affects millions of Americans each year. A young person is less likely to get Alzheimer’s disease compared to a person over 65.
The first part of the body that goes is the memory. People affected with Alzheimer’s disease have a hard time remembering events, recent names and activities. The symptoms start off as being mild. As this disease progresses it becomes worse. People with Alzheimer’s sometimes forget how to do some basic tasks, like brushing their hair or even forget how to climb stairs. Sometimes as the disease grows even worse, they may forget how to speak.
The scientists are not sure as to what causes Alzheimer’s disease, but studies suggest that brain metabolism might play a role in Alzheimer’s disease.
Could Brain Metabolism be the Cause of Alzheimer’s Disease?
Now there are scientists who are cautious to specify what the exact cause of Alzheimer’s disease, because they are not sure themselves. There are some factors that will increase your risk. The main one is age. Another factor is family history can be a cause in the development of Alzheimer’s. There is a certain type of protein that can be inherited and has been determined to be a cause. So, genetics can also be a risk to developing Alzheimer’s disease. Another cause can be inflammation of the brain or a head injury.
Scientist are unsure about the cause of Alzheimer’s disease, but studies have shown that brain metabolism may be a cause. What happens is in brain metabolism that is causes the neurons to stop functioning, which will cause a build up of molecules called oxygen free radicals. The theory concludes that the every day function of the brain could lead to the development of Alzheimer’s.
Some research says that completing crossword puzzles and other mind games can help to prevent Alzheimer’s. We need to put away the crossword puzzle theory in favor of the brain metabolism theory. But let’s not put the pencil down right away.  The theory about brain metabolism is just that a theory. Hopefully over the years to come scientist will be able to conduct more research on this brain metabolism theory. When Alzheimer’s is better understood, it could be possible to treat this deadly disease.
