How Do You Know If It Is Time To Shed Those Extra Pounds?

Are you amongst the millions of people who look in the mirror daily and say to themselves "I must lose that excess weight"? Practically everybody has done this at one time or another and in most instances you really do need to lose some weight. This is not however always necessary and so just how do you know whether or not you really should get rid of those extra pounds?

One big problem with weight gain lies in the fact that it tends to creep up on you when you are not looking and this is being witnessed particularly in countries such as the USA where obesity is classed as an epidemic. Because however your weight generally increases slowly over many months, you generally simply do not notice the increase in terms of changes to your appearance and only notice it when you jump on the bathroom scales. Thus, it is a good idea to get into the habit of checking your weight regularly (roughly once a month is normally sufficient) and if you discover that it is rising noticeably then it is time to lose that excess weight.

Opinions differ about just what amounts to obesity but for our purposes here if your weight has increased by in excess of perhaps thirty pounds or so then you are probably heading towards obesity and a host of accompanying medical problems.

Yet another sign that you need to go on a diet is if a friend tells you that you are overweight. Now it is possible that you will take offense when someone tells you that you need to go on a diet but keep in mind that they probably found it hard to find the courage to tell you and are also practically always demonstrating a very real concern about your state of health, rather than passing a comment about the way you look.

A further indication that you have put on too much weight is when you begin to experience difficulty with easy tasks like running to catch a bus or climbing the stairs and discover yourself getting out of breath. This is not necessarily a consequence of carrying too much weight and could be caused by other health problems, however you would be surprised at just how many times the cause turns out to be weight. Your body is starting to sound its alarm bells and these should most definitely not be ignored.

One final and very simple, although frequently ignored, indication of weight gain is simply finding that your clothes no longer fit as they used to. A slightly tight waistband after Christmas is normal for many of us but when it continues getting tighter and tighter and you find yourself buying bigger and bigger sizes each time you go shopping then it is time to go on a diet before your expanding waist stretches both your clothes and your credit card.

These are of course just a small number of examples of the numerous indicators that you are overweight and need to take some corrective action. Excessive weight has a tendency to creep up on you gradually and it is far too easy simply not to notice it at all. The secret to both feeling and looking good is quite simple - know your ideal weight and jump on the bathroom scales once in a while to ensure that you are not putting on too much weight.
